from ornament to plain/ brooch nº 5

During the earthquake (Chile, February 2010), a lot of old buildings suffered structural damages. But those injuries were also superficial, that with time, they will be covered in a very simple and poor manner.

These buildings are the present image of Valparaiso’s  rich past, influenced by English and German immigrants. Now, the facades look broke and patched.

A month after the earthquake I travelled to the most damaged area. With a big respect I picked up pieces of wood, that a month ago were part of the modest houses that the tsunami took away. I used them “in the way I found them, raw” to create a series of 7 pieces called FROM ORNAMENT TO PLAIN.

Durante el terremoto ( Febrero 2010, Chile), muchos edificios sufrieron daño estructural. Pero estos daños también fueron superficiales, los que con el tiempo serán cubiertos en una manera muy pobre y simple.

Estos edificios son la presente imagen de un rico pasado de la ciudad de Valparaíso, influenciada por inmigrantes ingleses y alemanes.  Ahora estas fachadas lucen rotas y parchadas.

Un mes después del terremoto, viajé a la zona más dañada. Con mucho respeto, recogí trozos de madera, que un mes antes habían sido parte de las modestas casas que el tsunami se llevó. Utilicé estos trozos en la manera que los encontré  "en bruto", para crear una serie de 7 piezas llamada DEL ORNAMENTO AL PLANO.
