Is contemporary jewellery a restricted matter of a small group of people?

Yes, I’m afraid it is, and on the other hand I think this should not be a problem. Art is elitist, design too, and author jewellery is something in between – sometimes inclined to art, sometimes to design. Not easy to understand. Jewellery artists should enjoy their freedom to discover new areas of thought, construction and form. Still I think, jewellery artists should also take more care of designing pieces that are affordable and wearable by more people. There are wonderful techniques, and industrial materials, that need to be investigated. One can do it besides the main line of thought in his/her work. Unfortunately, for most jewellery artists it is very hard to make a design which is fit for multiplication.

Sí, me temo que es, y por otro lado creo que esto no debería ser un problema. El arte es elitista, el diseño también, y la joyería de autor es algo intermedio - a veces inclinada al arte, a veces al diseño. No es fácil de entender. Los joyeros artísticos deben gozar de su libertad para descubrir nuevas áreas de pensamiento, la construcción y la forma. Aún así creo que estos joyeros también deberían tener más cuidado al diseñar piezas  que sean más accesibles y usables por más personas. Hay técnicas maravillosas y materiales industriales, que necesitan ser investigados. Uno puede hacerlo, paralelo a la línea principal de su trabajo. Desafortunadamente, para la mayoría de los Joyero artistas es muy difícil hacer un diseño que sea apto para la multiplicación.

Because contemporary jewellery is difficult, it is important that people are wearing jewellery. The wearer is the intermediary between the maker and the viewer. What troubles me though is the fact that most collectors of contemporary jewellery are grey haired and (almost) retired. Where are the young supporters of author jewellery? Most of the old ones started collecting during the waves of new jewellery in the sixties, seventies and eighties – at least this is the case in The Netherlands. I don’t have the impression that there is a new audience for author jewellery. If my idea is right, I think this will be one of the biggest problems of contemporary jewellery in future: connecting to younger people.

Debido a que la joyería contemporánea es difícil, es importante que la gente esté usando joyas. El portador es el intermediario entre el fabricante y el espectador. Lo que me preocupa es sin embargo el hecho de que la mayoría de los coleccionistas de la joyería contemporánea tengan grises los cabellos y sean jubilados (o casi). ¿Dónde están los jóvenes partidarios de joyas de autor? La mayoría de los antiguos comenzaron a coleccionar durante las oleada de nueva joyería en los años sesenta, setentas y ochentas - al menos este es el caso de los Países Bajos. No tengo la impresión de que hay una nueva audiencia para las joyas de autor. Si mi idea es correcta, creo que este será uno de los mayores problemas de la joyería contemporánea en el futuro: la conexión a las personas más jóvenes.
